I just finished the much hyped Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler, which recently came out. The story follows Tess, a recent college graduate who lands a job at one of the best restaurants in New York. Tess must navigate being in a new city by herself with the politics and people of the restaurant. She inevitably falls in love with the bartender and is intrigued by an older server who begins to mentor her.
Tess is often hard to respect or even like because of the choices she is making. Her love interest is clearly not as into her as she is into him. She drinks and uses drugs to her detriment. Through all of that, there was something that reminded me of what it was like to be at your first job right out of college. I worked in an office where there were long hours and everyone was young and smart. It was easy to get swept up in an inter-office relationship with someone who probably was not right for you. I wanted so badly for Tess to succeed and enjoyed every moment of her story.
