My husband and I watched another one of the Best Picture nominees, The Big Short. I loved this movie. Directed by Adam McKay, who did Anchorman and other Will Ferrell movies, it tells the story of the collapse of the housing market in 2007-2008 and the few traders who bet against it. It stars Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carrell.
The Big Short is based on a book by Michael Lewis, who also wrote Moneyball, another movie I really enjoyed. Lewis has a knack for taking complicated ideas and making them easier to understand and also into a great story. The Big Short jumps from character to character, piecing together the story of Wall Street right before and during the burst of the housing bubble. The movie uses several techniques to make even complicated financial concepts entertaining, including rap music and letting celebrities (playing themselves) break into the narrative and explain something. The movie has a ton of humor and overall, was a great pick to watch together.
