In our effort to watch the Best Picture nominees this year, my husband and I watched Bridge of Spies over a few nights. (Hey, it’s hard to watch a whole movie straight through when you are exhausted at night). The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
The movie tells the story of an insurance lawyer named James Donovan who becomes involved in defending a Russian spy in the 1960, during the height of the Cold War. The led him to travel to East Germany to assist in the negotiations of a prisoner exchange. The film was beautifully shot and very well acted. As a (former) attorney, I enjoyed the legal aspects of it, as well as learning more about that part of history. Not having lived through the Cold War, it is fascinating how high the stakes were between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Overall, we both enjoyed it and would recommend.
